A man and woman are getting married. The woman has been married before and her ex husband is quite obsessive. he turns up at the wedding and shoots her because he can't bare to see her with anyone else. The new husband goes on a revenge mission to avenge the wife's death.
The opening scene would be the shooting at the wedding. He would shoot her as 'speak now or forever hold your peace' is said. I would include the following codes and conventions: a gun, the idea of good against evil and ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.
I'd use an establishing shot to show that it is set at a wedding as well as lots of point of view shots from the bride to put the audience in her position. Close ups would be used to show emotion. I'd begin the opening with long takes to show the calmness of the wedding and switch to short takes after the gun shot to emulate the panic and chaos. The score would also mimic the action. it would begin calm and become more tense as the scene went on.

Group Meeting One
Our final idea starts off by establishing a boyfriend and girlfriend saying goodbye to each other whilst we cross cut to a gang discussing something. The girlfriend begins to walk home and is about to turn the corner when she over hears the gang discussing a plot that could be fatal to lots of people. She gets her phone out and decides to film it when they hear her and then there is a chase. For a moment, she thinks she is safe so she quickly takes the memory card out of the phone. They find and shoot her, taking the phone with them (so they think they've got away with it and their plan is still secret) but we cut to a shot of her body on the ground and in the palm of her hand we see the memory card. The rest of the film would be the police/detectives using this memory card to try and foil the plan.
The reason we discarded our original three individual ideas is because we thought they were two unachievable to make. Although they fit the thriller genre and are narratively gripping, they included either a police station, wedding or office building which we didn't have access to.
The feedback we got from the class is that the idea is well thought out and engaging but they we need to think about what it is the female character over hears that causes them to kill her. To fit to the genre of a thriller, it has to be something that is bigger than her such as a terrorist attack which is something we can think about in our next meeting.

Questionnaire One
1. What is your favourite genre of film: horror, thriller, comedy or romance?3. How often do you watch thrillers: daily, weekly, monthly, annually?
4. Who do you go to watch thrillers with: family, friends or other?
5. Females - How old are you?
6. Males - How old are you?
7. Females - What is your favourite genre to watch?
8. Males - What is your favourite genre to watch?
From our graphs, we can see that more males than females watch the thriller genre as 60% of males said thrillers were their favourite whereas only 20% of girls did. Out of these males, we found that 70% of them are 14 years old so our target audience is male teenagers. We can also see that it's most popular for people to see thrillers on a weekly basis with their friends. This makes it clear that we are not attempting to make a family friendly movie.

Questionnaire Two
1. What colour would you expect a villain to wear: black, white, grey, red or green?
2. Where would you expect a thriller to be set: village, rural area, theme park, city or train station?
3. What do you think the music in a thriller should be like: calm, happy, foreboding, tense or jumpy?
4. What character traits do you expect the hero to have: bravery, boldness, anger, fear, shyness?
5. What kind of props do you expect to see in a thriller: balloon, alcohol, drugs, weapons or flowers?

Our Film Pitch
By Group
Focus Group Task
We pitched our film idea to a group of 30 teenagers which would be our target audience. We used the presentation above which lasted about 5 to 10 minutes. Once we had finished, they gave us feedback on what was good and what needed changing or clarifying. This was useful as we could see what was or was not favourable with our audience.
This is the feedback we received:
By Group
Group Meeting Three
In todays group meeting, we discussed the feedback we got. These are the minutes we took:
The positive feedback to our pitch included: the audience liked the plot twist of the extraction of the SD card from the phone resulting in the acquired information being salvaged, the varied setting featured in our opening sequence, the originality aspect of our plot, our company logo, the tense chase scene and finally the idea of the final shot. Therefore, we shall definitely include these things in our opening scene as they have been shown to please the audience.
The first piece of constructive feedback we’re addressing is the concern over the realism of showing the police. Instead of actually showing the police as people, we plan to use the sound effect of a siren added in post-production in the background of the shot revealing the SD card is safe. This means we don’t have to cast people to play convincing police.
The next point is there was confusion over whether there was one single villain or a whole gang of villains. We plan on having two gang members in our film that shall portray villains.
The question of how many actors we would have and who shall play the gang was also brought up. We shall have four actors (girlfriend, boyfriend and two gang members) and the gang members shall be played by Sophie and Charlotte. The realism of having teenage girls as gang members seemed to be unconvincing, but given our situation this is something we shall have trouble changing. To make it as realistic as possible, the gang members shall be wearing hoodies which shall conceal their identities.
Some people felt the amount of violence in the opening scene may make the genre of the film more like a Horror. We just want to confirm that the only violent act used in the opening is a gunshot, which you shall only see the action of and the body.
The final point is the question of will there be suspense. We will build suspense when the girl thinks she is safe and is trying to remove the SD card, through the use of close ups and a handheld camera.
By Group
Our Amended Pitch
The changes are in bold and underlined.
We pitched our film idea to another focus group composed again, of our target audience. In this pitch, we included changes that we made from the feedback we had previously received off the target audience to see if this was more pleasing for them.
In conclusion, pitching our film has been very useful as it has allowed us to see what people think about our idea. We have been able to find out that the idea of our film is seen to be original and favourable with our target audience but there was concern about some aspects of realism and how tension would be built. We have discussed this as a group and have to come to the following conclusions which we added into our presentation which was used when we presented our amended pitch. It was believed that in our final shot of the opening, the police would arrive to find the body and SD card so we have confirmed that we don't actually see the police arrive, we just hear the sound of sirens in the background to insinuate that they do. There was also a question about teenage girls portraying a gang and how believable that would look. In our amended pitch, we told the audience how the gang members would be wearing hoodies that concealed their identity so you wouldn't know they were being played by teenage girls. We received feedback telling us that this still wouldn't be completely believable so we have decided to use male actors to play the gang members so that we adhere to the genre codes and conventions. The way we decided to build tension is to use a handheld camera and lots of close ups especially when the girl is taking the SD card out to show urgency and how frantic she is. It was also brought to our attention in the amended pitch, that the scene between the boyfriend and the girlfriend at the beginning of our thriller is unnecessary and shouldn't be featured in the opening. As a group, we all agree with this as the boyfriend plays no further part in the film and the scene just delays the tension of the opening so, we have decided to take it out.
By Group
Mise En Scene Survey
We have conducted a survey on props, locations and costume with our target audience. This allows us to see what our target audience would expect to see in our thriller film which helps us make it to be successful. We gave the survey to 20 people and these are the results we received.
1. Our film is going to be set in an urban city setting. Which of these would you prefer the opening of our film to take place within the city: underground subway, alley way, housing estate or an under pass?
2. Our film is going to have a set of villains and a character who acts heroically. What would you prefer to see the villain wearing: black hoodie, black leather jacket, black cloak or a black suit?
3. What would you prefer to see the hero wearing: a pale jacket, white t shirt, cape or a business suit?
4. Our film is of the thriller genre and will therefore feature weapons. Which of these would you most like to see in a thriller: gun, bat, knife or a crowbar?
Looking at these results, I can see that an alleyway is the preferred location, the villain should be wearing a black hoodie, our hero should be wearing a pale jacket and the weapon to be used should be a gun. This means we can include all these things in our opening to please the target audience and make the opening of our thriller as successful as possible.
By Group
Timeline
Here is our initial time line we made with feedback on what is good about it and what could be done to improve. The feedback was given to us by people who would be in our target audience. This allowed us to know exactly what they want to see so our opening scene can be as good as possible.
By Group
Here is the new timeline with our added improvements.
By Kate Harrold
In our improved timeline, we added more detail such as the name of the distribution company and the name of our film. We also included not only what credits would appear but also roughly where the different parts of the plot in. Settings are also included in our timeline such as an alleyway and urban area.

Film Outline
Production Title: Enigma
Production Company Name: Capital Cinema Copyright: Charlotte Bell, Kate Harrold & Sophie Ordidge
Distribution: Koch Media
Feature Music: The music we use in our film will either be made by ourselves or will be copyright free music downloaded off the internet.
Formats: It will be produced in Final Cut Pro, saved as a .mov and viewed in QuickTime.
Music Supervision: Charlotte Bell, Kate Harrold & Sophie Ordidge
Target Audience: After looking at the results from the two questionnaires we did, we have concluded that it is mainly males of ages 14+ that go to see thriller films with their friends on a monthly basis. Therefore our target audience is males of at least 15 years old.
Outline: A girl walking home will be established whilst cross cutting to a gang. She continues to walk until she reaches an alley. She's unsure of whether to go down it but does anyway. She is about to turn a corner when she hears a gang talking about a widespread crime. Girl realises the importance of what she is hearing and films it on her mobile phone. The gang hear the sound of her phone going off. The gang chase the girl through an urban area. The girl thinks she has escaped and removes the SD card from her phone containing the video. The audience hear a gun shot as the camera then pans onto the girl who they discover is the one who got shot. She has her phone in one hand and the SD card is in her other hand hidden from view. The gang approach her body and take the phone out of her hand and break it. They believe they are safe. The final shot shall be of the girl’s hand slightly revealing the SD card still in her hand – it is safe. The audience hear the sound of sirens in the background indicating the police are on the way and the SD card shall be found. She did not die in vain.
Post Production: We shall all take it in turns to edit sections of our opening scene and then as a group we shall work together to make sure it is the best that it can be.
Synopsis: After the gang kill Jen (the girl) in the opening scene the audience will hear the sound of police sirens in the background. This will indicate to them that her body and the SD card are going to be found by the police. The rest of the film will involve the police trying to work out who the gang is ran by and how to stop their plan from working as the video found on the SD card only reveals so much of the plan.

Character Development Profiles
Who are your characters? Jennifer Adams, Taylor Riley and Alex Queen
Background? Jennifer is a 17 year old girl who has been living with her mom and brother ever since her dad was killed in a hit and run stabbing when she was only 8 years old. She often falls out with her mom so she spends a lot of time at her boyfriend's house. She wants to grow up to have a career in law enforcement because of how her dad's death affected her. Taylor and Alex met during middle school where they were both constant trouble and they have stayed friends ever since. As they got older, they became involved in crime. It started out as petty street crime such as shop lifting but then they became a part of a notorious local gang who are now planning a widespread crime. Taylor has never has a close connection with his family and doesn't associate himself with them whilst Alex was a foster child so has never felt a part of something.
Motivation? Jennifer's motivation to film the gang is because she doesn't want their plan to go ahead because she hates to see people get hurt. After her dad was killed, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in law or law enforcement so by filming them, she feels like even though she's risking her life, its for the greater good. Taylor and Alex's motivation for being a part of the gang and carrying out this crime is that they've always been neglected throughout their lives. Neither of them have ever had a loving family and because of that, they turned to hurting other people.
Conflict? Although Jen wants to help people and acts courageous and brave, she is still fragile. She put on a good show but inside, she knows the danger out there in the world because of what happened to her dad. She faces the struggle between caution and bravery in the opening scene. Taylor and Alex have no conflicting traits in their personality. They know when they want something and will do anything to make it happen. They have no hesitation.
Desire/Goal? Jennifer's desire/goal is to either help people who went through what she went through or to try and help prevent it. In the opening, her goal is to foil the plans of the gangs crime by filming it with the intention of giving it to the police. Taylor and Alex's ultimate goal is to carry out this widespread crime so that they are in favour with the rest of the gang. Their goal in the opening scene though is to ensure that Jen doesn't foil their plan.
Traits? Jennifer is brave and courageous for filming the gang. She is also smart as she realised what was happening but this means she also takes risks. Jen is also very devoted as ever since her dads death, she has known what she wants to do in life. Taylor and Alex are very cold due to the fact that they never care. They've put up walls around them to make them appear steely and threatening.
Characteristics? Jennifer has quite a level headed serious personality. She doesn't like to let her guard down in fear of something happening. The only time she's really herself is when she's with her boyfriend because she feels safe. Taylor and Alex are determined to not let anything get in their way as they do not want their plan to be compromised. They are not afraid of the police due to the reputation of the gang which makes them more menacing.

Possible Problems Whilst Filming
Organisation –To make sure our entire group is organised, we shall create a time table of things we need to work on/decide. We shall aim to time keep well and stick to deadlines set by ourselves, and by our teachers. We shall allocate specific jobs to certain people and give them deadlines. This shall hopefully ensure all members of the group have an equal share of work and all manage to finish it in time.

Communication – We shall strive to have to have good communication skills between our group of three members. We shall be respectful of each other and take turns in pitching new ideas. We shall evaluate each other’s opinions as a group and always make decisions depending on the satisfaction of the greatest number. If two of us agree on one thing, and the other member prefers another, we shall settle for the one with the greatest number of votes.
Technical – If our group encounters technical difficulties, we shall ask for the help off our teachers and peers. However, the three of us in the group are reasonably comfortable with using computers, editing and sound software to create our Thriller opening. Two out of three of our group members are very familiar with film editing so it is unlikely we shall run into problems regarding that aspect of our work.
Leaving equipment behind on shoot – To ensure we do not lose or leave any equipment behind at the shoot, we shall all be responsible for specific equipment. For example, Sophie shall be in charge of the microphone, Charlotte in charge of the camera and Kate in charge of the tripod. This shall guarantee we are careful with our equipment and don’t misplace any.
Not knowing what you’re doing on the shoot or why – Before each shoot we shall make a clear plan of what our aims of that particular shoot are. To make sure we achieve the goals we have set, and on time, we shall create a timetable of plans to follow which we shall stick to strictly. Ideally, we will all turn up to each shoot with a clear shared idea in our minds of what today’s objective will be.
Actors/ team members not turning up or being late – All members of the group are in possession of each other’s contact details, including: mobile numbers, email addresses, home addresses and social media accounts. This shall enable us to stay constantly in contact with each other. Being in constant contact shall make sure we all stick to our plans and are always in the light about our plans. It also means if we need to quickly contact each other, either for an unplanned meeting or to cancel shooting we can easily fill each other in.
Time wasting on the shoot – To prevent time wasting we shall make a timetable of aims we need to reach each meeting, with time deadlines which shall hopefully prevent us from wasting time as we are aware of what plan we should be sticking to.
Not pre-empting the weather – As we are filming outside, we are relying on the weather being what we desire. To make sure we film in our preferred weather, we shall always check the weather on the BBC website prior to filming. We shall plan our filming around the weather to make sure our final footage has our desired atmosphere. As we’re filming a Thriller, the weather we shall aim to film in shall be stormy, cloudy, dark weather as opposed to sunny, hot weather. The dark weather shall act as a foreboding sign of danger.
Not speaking out and saying how you feel – In our group we are all friends, which is a positive as it means we feel comfortable freely speaking our mind and sharing our opinions and views. As friends, we shall respectfully listen to each other’s ideas and shall compromise to achieve the satisfaction of the greatest number. We shall aim to remain calm and not lose our patience with each other to maintain the good relationships we share. We shall avoid arguments as we are all in it together and the end product shall represent us all so we should all try our best.
Actors getting bored/ annoyed/ cold/ hungry – To make sure we all have a comfortable filming experience, we shall take drinks, food and layered clothing to ensure we are all content and can perform to our best standard.
Batteries not charged – We shall take precautions such as charging all the equipment’s batteries prior to filming to make sure all our filming is captured and of the best quality we can make it. We shall take it in turns to charge the camera’s batteries to ensure the responsibility doesn’t always lie with one person. We shall all share responsibilities equally to prevent any one member getting overly stressed.
Don’t know how to use equipment – Before each filming session we shall make sure we all know how to use our equipment. If we are unable to work any piece of equipment, we shall ask for help from our teachers or our peers. Over time, we shall know more definitely how each piece of equipment works, but initially we need to know the basic operations the equipment performs.
Poor sound – A microphone is part of our equipment list, and this shall make sure all the dialogue in our opening is clear and can be easily picked out from all the other sounds included in our opening such as sound effects and the score we shall compose. This shall hopefully increase the quality of our finished film.
Shaky camera – A tripod is a piece of equipment we shall use to steady our camera, resulting in our shots being seamless and of a good quality. A shaky camera is only desired when we are aiming to build tension when the girlfriend character in our opening scene is frantically removing the SD card from her mobile phone. Apart from this, all our shots should appear seamless.
